I have high hopes on another type meter 2010-03-16 |
| By George S. Hoke Jr. (Idaho Falls, Idaho) |
| Tried to install this on a home that has an electroncic type meter. Never did get it to work. I have a retirement home in Colorado that has a rotary type meter and I will try it there next month. Our rates in CO are .17 cents per KWH so it will be a big help spotting the energy hogs at that house. |
Great product for everyone. 2010-03-15 |
| By M. Sanderson (Michigan, USA) |
| Great product. I have enjoyed watching the read-out display as my energy usage goes up and down. You never know how much it is really costs you every time you turn something on till you buy this item. It is a great learning tool and money saving device. It would be great if you had kids to show them how much it cost whenever they leave something on. The item is easy to use and setup. |
Excellent monitor 2010-03-06 |
| By consumer |
| The monitor is easy to set up and read with good instructions. We have southern california edison with a 5 tiered system. The monitor has gone to "sleep" (several times in 3 days which seems to have been solved by 2 new batteries in the monitor) which has interrupted continuous monitoring but appears to be accurate. Monitoring of individual appliances is dependent on no other appliances turning on or off at the time. Readings occur every 30 secs. I simply watch the readout change when the appliance turns on for 30-90 secs. The reading is verified by the Kill-A-Watt EZ P4460 P3 International P4460 Kill A Watt EZ Electricity Usage Monitor (on sale at Costco for $27 right now) readout on the same appliance (also highly recommended). Costs can be dramatic. We use a space heater for about 2-3 hours at night to warm up the bedroom. That calculates to about $50/month! Will try to remember to update after a couple of months use. |
Right idea, but not accurate enough 2010-03-01 |
| By Alexander Karstens (Clayton,NC USA) |
I originally bought this product, because it had a unique sensor, that would work with the older meters.
I used this product for about 1 week, before I returned it:
Pros:
- Generic sensor works with pretty much any meter
- Display unit is extremely easy to setup
- TARE function is very cool, to determine power consumption of individual loads
Cons:
- Installing the sensor can be tricky. It took me a couple of days to get it work reliably. The Black&Decker support was extremely nice and helpful with this.
- The minimum power reading of the unit is 300W, which is disappointing. If your meter shows less than 300 Watts power draw, the sensor/display unit will not work reliably.
- It only has a resolution of 100 Watts.
The unit is accurate enough for high loads (for example if you dryer is running), but falls short for small loads. You are better off using a timer and a pocket calculator to measure power.
All in all, it is not a bad product, but if you are looking for very accurate measurements, this is not for you.

Energy Police is here! 2010-02-25 |
| By J. Hudson (Southern California) |
I purchased this device a couple of days ago and so far I am very happy with it.
Living in S Cal, my monthly electrical bill AVERAGES $425! (I am on the level pay plan) so it would be nice if I could cut this down a bit.
The best part about this monitor is that while I sit here typing this review, I can look at the display and see how much electricity is currently being used (1.5kw) As I get a feel for our power usage, a quick glance at the display will let me know if something got left on - like a computer, tv, etc or someone has "all the lights in the house on" lol
When I see a surge, with the meter in hand, I can go to my kids room or the family room or whatever and announce "Energy Police" and check to see what is going on and what has been left on.
We all forget to turn off things now and then, and I can see how this will really help conserve electriciy. I like it! |
