 Does this really eliminate 99% lead??? 2010-03-21 |

Many consumers who buy this product believe that it eliminates lead from their drinking water. The product specs on Amazon also claims 99% lead removal.
When I examined their pitcher, I found a lot of legal stff at the bottom of the pitcher in very hard to read font. This alerted me - if a product does eliminate 99% lead, why would they not advertise it in big letters right in front?
Then I looked carefully at the box in which the replacement filters came in.
Turns out - The certification is on the side of the box - is again in very tiny font. So you will normally fail to notice it is in there. The only claims made are for copper, mercury and cadmium. No mention of lead. Why can't Brita tell us what the deal is regarding lead reduction in BIG COLORFUL font?
If you are using this product believing it to reduce lead levels - time to wake up. I'm going back to my earlier sears system which was NSF certified to remove 99% of lead. |

PROS: Works as advertised, makes Baltimore water taste way better.
CONS: Every time I open the reservoir, I see what looks like pepper.
FINAL VERDICT: Don't have much of a choice when it comes to what filter you want to put in your Brita.
SUMMARY: As mentioned above in Cons, the filter appears to be causing backwash. Note, this is not going into what I drink, the other way around. When I fill it up with water, there is a top half (reservoir) that slowly allows water to flow through the filter and down into the bottom half. It's the reservoir that is filling up inexplicably with this stuff. I rinse it out and it keeps coming. But as long as it doesn't get into my drink, I suppose I can't complain. Just not too appetizing.

| I'm glad I bought my Brita. The filter works great. Just be sure to soak it and run water through it a couple of times until the water runs clear. I check the water in a clear glass container because the pitcher is tinted and it's hard to see if the water is clear. |

| I have been using these for about 6 years now. The water tastes slightly better through this filter than tap water. About 95% of all liquid I drink is water, so this slight difference is important to me. To Brita, I wish you improve your QA process. About 1 in 4 filters has black stuff (charcoal?) coming out of it. This occurs both on the top and the bottom of the filter. I am very OCD, so I follow the directions exactly, which means that it's probably not my fault. I uploaded a picture for everyone to see (click on "see all customer images" at the top of the page). Still, even with this issue, I recommend this product because the filters are very cheap when bought in bulk and it does work, i.e. the water tastes better. For that 1 in 4 product with the defect, it can be annoying waiting for the charcoal to sink to the bottom every time I pour a glass of water. Also, I have to constantly remind myself that there's stuff at the bottom of the glass so that I won't accidentally swallow it. Thus, -1 star. |
