How to Calculate GPA by Course Credits
A semester GPA is a credit-weighted average of the grade points earned in courses that count toward GPA. This calculator lets you enter each course's point value and credit hours, then shows the total quality points, total credits, and resulting average. Use the grade-point values and rules published by your school; there is no universal conversion from a letter grade to GPA points.
How to use this GPA calculator
- 1Choose the 4.0, 5.0, or 10.0 maximum scale that matches your institution. The scale sets the allowed range; it does not translate letter grades.
- 2For each course, enter its numeric grade points and GPA-bearing credits. Edit the course label if useful, remove rows that do not apply, or add rows for additional courses.
- 3Select Calculate GPA. Check quality points and total GPA credits alongside the result, then compare your inputs with your transcript or course records.
The credit-weighted formula
For each row, multiply the grade point or semester GPA by its GPA credits. Add those quality points and divide by the sum of the credits.
GPA = Σ(course grade points × course credits) ÷ Σ(course credits)
The selected scale checks that grade-point entries fall within the maximum you chose. It does not determine what a letter grade is worth.
Worked example
Imagine a 3-credit course worth 4.0 points and a 4-credit course worth 3.0 points. Their quality points are 3 × 4.0 = 12 and 4 × 3.0 = 12. Together that is 24 quality points over 7 credits, so the GPA is 24 ÷ 7 = 3.43. The four-credit course has more influence because it carries more credits.
What to include in your calculation
Use the credit figure that your institution counts toward GPA, which may differ from attempted or earned credits. Keep all grade points on the same scale and use the same academic policy for every row. If you are unsure whether a class counts, check the transcript legend, registrar guidance, or student handbook before entering it.
This tool shows the arithmetic for the rows you provide. It does not access a student record or know how your school treats repeated courses, withdrawals, incomplete grades, pass/fail work, transfer credit, academic forgiveness, or rounding.
Frequently asked questions
Do I enter letter grades or percentages?
Enter the numeric grade-point values assigned by your institution. This calculator does not convert a letter grade or percentage because grading tables differ.
What are quality points?
For a course, quality points equal its grade points multiplied by the number of GPA credits. The calculator adds these values before dividing by total credits.
Should a pass/fail course be included?
Follow your institution's policy. If the course is excluded from GPA, leave it out; if it contributes points and credits, enter the values used by the official record.
Why can my transcript show a different GPA?
A school may apply its own repeat, withdrawal, transfer, pass/fail, rounding, or grade replacement rules. This tool only uses the values entered here.
