Sun, Moon & Rising Sign
Estimate your astrology sun, moon, and rising signs from birth details.
Enter birth date, local time, UTC offset, and birthplace coordinates. Use negative longitudes west of Greenwich and positive longitudes east. This uses approximate tropical zodiac calculations; exact chart results can vary near sign boundaries.
Astrology is for entertainment and reflection; this is not a scientific or professional reading. Rising sign estimates depend on accurate birth time and location.

Sun, Moon & Rising Sign Calculator
The Sun, Moon, and Rising signs are often called the astrological “Big Three.” This calculator estimates them from your birth date, local birth time, UTC offset, and coordinates. You will need the time zone and location from when you were born; your current city and time zone won't be a substitute.
How to use it
- Enter your birth date and local clock time.
- Enter the UTC offset that applied at the birthplace on that date, including daylight-saving time if it was in effect. The field accepts offsets from −12 to +14 hours, in quarter-hour steps.
- Enter latitude from −90° to 90° and longitude from −180° to 180°. Use negative longitude west of Greenwich and positive longitude east.
- Choose Calculate signs. The result includes the three signs and the approximate tropical longitudes used to assign them.
What the calculation does
The tool converts local birth time to UTC using the offset you enter, then converts that moment to a Julian Date. Approximate solar and lunar longitude formulas provide the Sun and Moon positions. For the Rising sign, it estimates local sidereal angle from Greenwich sidereal time and longitude, then combines that with latitude and Earth's axial tilt to estimate the ecliptic point rising on the eastern horizon.
Finally, the tropical zodiac is divided into twelve 30° ranges. The calculator maps each longitude to the range containing it. Because the formulas are compact approximations, dates near a sign boundary can be especially sensitive to an inaccurate time or offset. This isn't a full natal chart or a professional ephemeris.
What each sign refers to in astrology
- Sun sign: the sign assigned to the Sun's estimated ecliptic longitude at birth.
- Moon sign: the sign assigned to the Moon's estimated ecliptic longitude. It changes more quickly than the Sun sign.
- Rising sign (Ascendant): the sign estimated at the eastern horizon for the time and location entered. Birth time and coordinates matter a lot here.
Frequently asked questions
Why do you ask for UTC offset and coordinates instead of city?
The calculator uses numeric inputs directly and doesn't geocode city names or look up historical time-zone rules. Enter the offset and coordinates for your birthplace and birth date.
What if I don't know my birth time?
The Sun sign may still be close, but the Moon sign can change during a day and the Rising sign depends strongly on time. Without a reliable time, treat those results as uncertain.
Are the interpretations scientifically proven?
No. The calculator estimates positions using astronomy-inspired formulas, but astrological personality meanings and predictions are not established by empirical science. Use the result for entertainment or reflection.
