Tool guide

About FPS Tester

Estimate how often the browser can render frames in the current test. The value reflects this page, browser, display, and device workload; it is not a complete benchmark of graphics performance.

How to use this tool

  1. 1Start the frame-rate test and let it run for a few seconds.
  2. 2Read the reported frames-per-second estimate and note any movement or stutter.
  3. 3Repeat under similar conditions if comparing settings, closing other heavy tabs first.

How the tool works

A browser animation loop counts frame callbacks over elapsed time, commonly using requestAnimationFrame. The resulting rate depends on display refresh, browser scheduling, power mode, and page load; it can be capped by the screen.

Worked real-world example

A display refreshing at 60 Hz may report around 60 frames per second when the browser keeps pace, but the page cannot force a higher physical refresh rate.

Common scenarios and use cases

Check a quick browser animation rate or compare how a device behaves before and after a change.

Important details and limitations

This is not a GPU stress test, standardized benchmark, or proof of a monitor's full capabilities. Background tabs and variable refresh technologies can change results.

Check the output unit as well as the number. If the result will be reused in another calculation, retain full precision where possible and round only at the end. For measurements governed by a technical specification, use the standard and tolerance required by that document.

Frequently asked questions

Can the result be higher than the display refresh rate?

It may vary by measurement method, but visible updates remain limited by the display.

Why does the number fluctuate?

Scheduling, workload, power mode, and browser behavior change frame timing.

Does it test game performance?

No. A game has different graphics and CPU demands.
