How to Calculate Cumulative GPA Across Semesters

Cumulative GPA combines the GPA-bearing work from multiple semesters. When terms have different credit totals, averaging the semester GPAs equally gives each term the same weight, which can distort the overall result. This calculator weights each semester GPA by the credits that contributed to it, then divides combined quality points by combined credits.

How to use this CGPA calculator

  1. 1Choose the GPA scale used by your institution and make sure every semester value uses that same scale.
  2. 2Enter one row per semester. For each row, provide its GPA and the number of credits that counted toward that GPA; use the GPA-bearing total, not necessarily all attempted credits.
  3. 3Select Calculate CGPA and review the combined quality points and credits. Check repeat-course, transfer-credit, and exclusion rules before treating the estimate as official.

The credit-weighted formula

For each row, multiply the grade point or semester GPA by its GPA credits. Add those quality points and divide by the sum of the credits.

CGPA = Σ(semester GPA × semester credits) ÷ Σ(semester credits)

The selected scale checks that grade-point entries fall within the maximum you chose. It does not determine what a letter grade is worth.

Worked example

Suppose Semester 1 has a 3.2 GPA over 15 GPA credits and Semester 2 has a 3.8 GPA over 9 credits. The combined quality points are (3.2 × 15) + (3.8 × 9) = 48 + 34.2 = 82.2. Divide by 24 total credits to get a CGPA of 3.425, displayed as 3.43. A simple mean would be 3.50 and would incorrectly give both semesters equal weight.

What to include in your calculation

Use the credit figure that your institution counts toward GPA, which may differ from attempted or earned credits. Keep all grade points on the same scale and use the same academic policy for every row. If you are unsure whether a class counts, check the transcript legend, registrar guidance, or student handbook before entering it.

This tool shows the arithmetic for the rows you provide. It does not access a student record or know how your school treats repeated courses, withdrawals, incomplete grades, pass/fail work, transfer credit, academic forgiveness, or rounding.

Frequently asked questions

Why not average the semester GPAs directly?

That is accurate only when every semester has the same GPA-credit total. With different credit loads, multiply each semester GPA by its credits first.

Which credits should I enter for a semester?

Use the credit total that was included when that semester GPA was calculated. Attempted, earned, and GPA credits can differ under school rules.

Can I combine semesters on different GPA scales?

No. Convert them using your institution's official method first, then enter values on one consistent scale.

How are repeated courses and transfer credits handled?

The calculator cannot infer those policies. Include only the values your institution uses in the cumulative GPA calculation.
