Crop a Photo to Common Passport and ID Dimensions

Passport, visa, and identity-photo specifications depend on the issuing authority and application. This tool creates a JPG crop at a common 35 × 45 mm or 2 × 2 inch pixel equivalent at 300 DPI, or at custom pixel dimensions. You can reposition the crop horizontally and vertically, but the tool does not certify compliance with official photo rules.

How to use this tool

  1. 1Check the current photo instructions from the authority receiving your application. Confirm required pixel dimensions, aspect ratio, head placement, background, format, and file-size limit.
  2. 2Choose a 35 × 45 mm equivalent, 2 × 2 inch equivalent, or custom pixel dimensions that match those instructions.
  3. 3Select a sharp source image with enough space around the subject. Adjust horizontal and vertical crop position to frame the face without cutting off required margins.
  4. 4Review the crop preview, download the JPG, and verify the exported pixel dimensions and size before uploading or printing.

Pixel size is not the whole photo specification

The presets use common calculations at 300 pixels per inch: 35 × 45 mm is approximately 413 × 531 pixels, and 2 × 2 inches is 600 × 600 pixels. The tool calculates a crop with the selected aspect ratio, lets you shift its placement, then scales it to the output canvas and saves a JPG with a white background. Print density is not embedded as a guarantee of physical size.

A practical example

If a form requests 600 × 600 pixels, choose the square preset and adjust the crop until the head and shoulders meet that form's framing guide. A 600 × 600 file can still fail if its background, expression, head size, or byte size does not match the rules.

A reliable workflow

Use the authority's official image guide as the source of truth. Preview the final file at full size and check facial positioning, lighting, shadows, sharpness, and background yourself. If the form includes a byte limit, verify the downloaded JPG with the upload checker or compress it only when readability and required dimensions remain acceptable.

Important limits and checks

  • The tool crops and resizes; it does not remove or replace the source background, retouch a face, or assess identity-photo compliance.
  • Common presets are examples, not universal passport standards. Requirements differ by country, document, and digital versus printed submissions.
  • The image is saved as JPG on a white output canvas; JPG does not preserve transparency and may re-encode image detail.

Frequently asked questions

Is the exported photo guaranteed to be accepted?

No. The tool does not evaluate the receiving authority's current rules or facial measurements. Check the final file against official instructions.

Which preset should I choose?

Choose the dimensions specified by the application. The 35 × 45 mm and 2 × 2 inch options are common examples only.

Does this remove the background?

No. It keeps the source background and exports the crop on a white canvas. Start with a photo that already meets the background requirement.

Can I enter custom dimensions?

Yes. Choose custom and enter the exact requested width and height in pixels.

Why does print size differ from the pixel dimensions?

Pixel dimensions describe image resolution, while physical print size also depends on print density. The export does not embed a guaranteed print-density setting.
